1963 Masaru Kono/Kohno B-721 Classical Guitar – Handmade in Tokyo – Early Kohno Luthier Instrument
This is a beautiful early Masaru Kohno classical guitar built in Tokyo in 1963, from the formative years of one of Japan’s most respected master luthiers.
The interior label reads:
Masaru Kohno – Constructor de Guitarras – Tokio – B-721 – Año 1963
Masaru Kohno would later become one of the most influential classical guitar makers in the world, and instruments from his early 1960s workshop are increasingly appreciated for their craftsmanship, tone, and historical importance. During this period Kohno was producing guitars in very small numbers, and much of the work was still done by hand.
This example features a beautifully aged spruce top paired with striking rosewood back and sides. The back displays dramatic, tight grain with strong visual character, giving the instrument a particularly elegant look compared to many guitars from the same series. The body is finished with classic understated binding and purfling, and the traditional slotted headstock retains its vintage open-gear tuners.
Tonally the guitar is warm, articulate, and responsive with excellent projection and clarity—qualities that have made Kohno guitars a favorite among classical players for decades. The instrument has opened up nicely with age and delivers a balanced voice suitable for both performance and recording.
Condition is very good for its age. The guitar shows normal cosmetic wear from decades of use including light marks and finish impressions, but there are no cracks or structural issues, and the guitar plays very well with comfortable action.
Early Kohno guitars from the 1960s are becoming increasingly desirable among players and collectors, especially clean, structurally sound examples like this one.
A wonderful opportunity to own a piece from the early career of Masaru Kohno, one of the most celebrated classical guitar builders to come out of Japan.
